Katarina Wit began skating at five. It was not long before her abilities became apparent and then in Karl-Marx-Stadt she entered a school specifically for kids with sporting talents. Here she first met their coach Jutta M ller. Witt was able to make her mark when she was ranked second at the 1982 World Championships, held in Copenhagen. Her grace and elegance captured everyone's attention, and from that point forward she began to dominate the game. Olympic victory At Sarajevo, in the Sarajevo Winter Games of 1984, Katarina Witz won the female silver medal in figure skating after an intense contest. Then, four years after the event, she was able to take home an even tighter race. She actually lost the free-skating competition, but was awarded the gold medal based on her performances during the compulsory figure and the short programme. Witt was the first woman ever since Sonja Haenie who was a repeat figure skating winner. Hall of Fame Witt was able to return to skating after her success as a movie actress. She took part in the Lillehammer Winter Games, 1994. She placed seventh but enchanted the crowd even though she didn't win an award. Witt was elected to the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1995.
